Male Fertility
Advanced Semen Cultures
Advanced semen culture testing identifies bacterial, fungal and viral infections in the male reproductive tract that a standard semen analysis or STI panel will not detect — but that can profoundly affect fertility.
Why It Matters
The Hidden Infection Factor
Male factor infertility is present in around 40–50% of couples struggling to conceive, yet the male partner is frequently under-investigated. A standard semen analysis measures count, motility and morphology — but cannot detect the presence of infectious organisms that silently impair sperm quality.
Advanced semen cultures provide a detailed microbiological picture of the male reproductive tract, enabling targeted treatment where infection is identified.
Beyond Standard STI Screening
Conventional STI panels test for a narrow range of pathogens. Advanced semen culture testing uses expanded microbiological analysis to detect bacterial, fungal and viral organisms that are often missed — yet can significantly impair sperm quality and function.
Bacterial Infections
Bacteria such as Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Chlamydia and Enterococcus species can colonise the male reproductive tract, triggering local inflammation, oxidative stress and impaired sperm motility and morphology — even without causing obvious symptoms.
Fungal & Viral Pathogens
Candida and other fungal organisms, along with viral infections, can establish within the reproductive tract and contribute to sperm DNA damage. Comprehensive culture testing identifies these organisms so that targeted treatment can be initiated.
Impact on IVF and IUI Outcomes
Untreated reproductive tract infections in men are increasingly recognised as a cause of otherwise unexplained IVF failure. Identifying and treating these infections prior to assisted conception can meaningfully improve outcomes.
DNA Fragmentation Testing
Semen culture testing pairs naturally with DNA fragmentation assessment — another advanced evaluation that a standard semen analysis cannot provide.
